Summer is almost here, which for libraries across the nation, means summer reading programs will begin soon. Summer reading programs are one of the most effective ways to get your children, teens, and even yourself to read during summer break. Most libraries offer these programs for free, and by simply reading and logging what you read, you and your children can win prizes! Even kids and teens who don’t normally like to read will be more likely to do so if there are incentives involved.

Here in the Fox Valley area, all the local libraries are offering summer reading programs.

St. Charles Public Library: Read for the Win

St. Charles is taking on the theme of the Olympics for their program, and are offering programs for infants all the way to adults. Sign up begins Wednesday, May 25, and the program runs through August 3. You can register at Youth Services desk for kids and teens, and at the Help Desk for Adults. For more information, check out their website here.

Geneva Public Library: Exercise Your Mind–Read

Geneva is also using the Olympics as the theme for their summer reading program. To go along with the sports theme, readers choose the “exercise track” that fits their reading style best, and fill out the logs to turn in. Programs are offered for youth (birth-5th grade), teens (6-12 grade), and adults. Registration begins May 25 and the program runs through August 3. More information can be found here.

Batavia Public Library: Summer Reading Club

Batavia’s reading incentive program is geared for children infancy through grade 8, as well as having programs for teens and adults. Readers fill out their logbook and bring it in once they meet different level requirements. The program runs June 4- August 3. More information can be found here (Top right hand corner of page).

South Elgin/Elgin Public Library: Mission: Read

South Elgin and Elgin libraries are using the space theme with their reading program. In addition to reading, their program also encourages their readers to do STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) activities to accompany their logs. Programs are offered for birth-adults. To download your log and to find more information, check out Gail Borden Library’s website here.
